Casting No Shadow & Running Faster than the Sun!!

I have waited a long time for this day – the day the sun passed directly overhead! Everyday, the sun passes in an arc from East to West (well, we spin really, but let´s take an earth-centric view of things!), no matter where we are in the world, excluding the very poles. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, North of 22.5 degrees, the Tropic of Cancer, then that arc will always be slightly to the South of you, and vice-versa for the South. If you live, or RUN, in between the Tropics, the sun will pass over your head twice a year. Today was that day, and the only time it will happen...

Running with Parrots

From the very South to the North of continental South America we have been in the company of parrots. Watching them preening, screaming over our heads, excavating nests or apparently checking us out on ´ fly-bys´ has just been amazing. They never cease to brighten us up and remind us how amazing this wild planet is!

What a difference a day makes……!

My running style was desperate, ripe for an injury. When we finally hit the 24 mile mark, I collapsed into tears, annoyed and frustrated. After over 5,400 miles how could this happen?! The truth is, it has never been easy. Usually after about mile 15 it begins to hurt, with the next 5 to 10...

Question from 8 year old, George, Morpeth, Northumberland. Thank you very much! Hmm. Now this is a particularly tricky question for two people who love wildlife and have a particular soft-soft for the feathered variety! Especially, as along the course of the thousands of miles that we have run, it has been birds more than anything that has kept us company. Because that is the cool thing about birds in particular. They are so visible. Where ever you are you can find them; whether in a city park, school play-ground, country lane, up high on the moors or running with us now through the largest...

How to become a Wildlife Detective

Posted by on May 21, 2013 in Big Toe Blog, Big Toe Noticeboard, Birds, Waddle on the Wildside | 0 comments

As you skip through the woods, fields or moorland or perhaps view the world from atop of a gnarly oak tree, do you ever wonder…. Where do animals hide during the day….? Do animals follow paths, even motorways….? What do they eat…..? Why not become a WILDLIFE DETECTIVE and start sniffing, watching & feeling for Wild Signs, to find out who has passed by….? ???Look for hair stuck on barbed wire or brambles, examine the shape of burrows and abandoned nests, look at the prints in soft mud, where have animals marked their territories and in what...
